When the systems work while everyone else sleeps
Logistics has an operating profile few other activities share: the systems have to work when the office is closed. Collections leave at dawn, deliveries arrive overnight, tracking keeps no hours. A failure at three in the morning that nobody notices blocks the entire chain the following day. That is why IT management for logistics and transport rests on two pillars: continuous monitoring that catches problems on its own, and out-of-hours cover that guarantees someone will act. The right question is not “who do I call when it breaks” but “who notices before it breaks”.
Transport paperwork, handled by AI
The sector drowns in documents: delivery notes, CMRs, waybills, proof of delivery, customs paperwork. Handling them by hand — reading, classifying, filing, retyping the data into the system — absorbs hours every day and generates errors. AI automation changes the game: it extracts the data from transport documents, classifies it, enters it into the systems (TMS, WMS, ERP) and refers only the doubtful cases to a person. The result is less data entry, fewer errors and information that stays aligned right along the chain.
Downtime is measured in shipments, not in hours
In logistics an IT failure at nine in the morning is not made up in the afternoon: lorries have a window, and that window passes. It is a difference that changes every criterion of choice.
Time to pick up the case matters more than anything else. Somebody has to answer within minutes, and there has to be a written emergency procedure that the warehouse knows, so goods can keep going out while the problem is being solved.
Redundancy belongs where the flow stops. Not everything deserves a second line or a second server: the system that governs dispatch does, the historical archive does not. The way to decide is to ask which process stops, not which machine stops.
A warehouse is a hostile radio environment
Handheld terminals that keep dropping off the network are the most common complaint, and almost never because of the equipment: it is because a warehouse is not an office.
Metal racking reflects the signal and creates dead zones that move as the stock changes. Forklifts are moving masses that interrupt the paths. Temperature-controlled chambers absorb signal. And operators walk, so the handover from one access point to the next has to happen without dropping the connection — something consumer equipment does not manage.
The answer is not to add an access point wherever it drops: it is a survey on site that measures real coverage with the warehouse full, and a design that accounts for the materials. It is a day’s work that removes a daily problem.
What we find in warehouses
- Wireless coverage that grew by addition, without a survey ever being carried out.
- A single server the whole operation depends on, with no redundancy and no plan for what happens if it stops.
- Departmental terminals missing from the inventory, which nobody updates because nobody knows how many there are.
- The warehouse system and the accounts system that do not talk, with somebody retyping documents by hand.
- No written procedure for a stoppage, so every time it is improvised at the moment of greatest pressure.
